Yoga Introduction

In ancient days, people devoted much time to taking care of their bodies and minds. Their needs and stress were limited. They were physically and mentaly healthy. As time rolled by, man’s quest to lead a better life and seek answers for the known and the unknown, led him to phenomenal advancements in the field of Science and Technology. This put him on a race, in which his  physical and mental well being was ignored. Our modern lifestyle has made us susceptible to diseases, bad food habits, and pollution.  As a consequence of poor mental health, execution of work becomes poor, does not measure up to expected levels,further aggravating stress levels. The search for a solution for this critical situation has been found in our ancient time-tested and proven practice of Yoga.  Yes, Yoga is our Divine gift, the key to mental and physical health.

History of Yoga

A study of ancient Indian tradition reveals that  yogic principles are the foundation for Indian Culture. Yoga follows the principles of science to regulate the individual’s physiological and psychological behaviors and hence Yoga is not a religion, but a spiritual experience. 

The great saint Patanjali, who is called the Father of Yoga, was the first man to write all the teachings of Yoga in Sanskrit as Yoga Sutras. But Patanjali is not the originator of Yoga. Yoga was practiced by our ancestors even before Patanjali’s birth.

Meaning of Yoga

The word ‘Yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit term ‘yuj’ which means to join, or unite, or bind. ‘Yoga’ means  union or merger.  It is a union of the individual consciousness, Jeevathma with the Divine God, Paramatma. This merger of the soul with divinity gives the experience of oneness with the universe.

Aim and Objectives of Yoga

The main objective  of Yoga is to integrate the body, mind, and thoughts, through systematic and regular practice, thereby increasing mental and physical health. Improved mental and physical strength,  will increase the resistance power to fight against the diseases, sharpen the mind and   increase concentration and memory power. Ultimately, yoga will  pave the way for an individual to perform any action peacefully and perfectly.
